The Maya 2008 view cube is no real substitute for the old view compass. This is a simple script that takes all of the old functionality of the view compass and parks it an its own handy shelf. Now there is no need to switch views or look for the orthographic button to rotate to an orthographic view. Simply poke one of the view compass icons and arrive at the orthographic view of your choice. This script doesn't take away anything from the current view cube funtionality and the "home" persp camera view is always one click away.
Directions: unzip and drop icons into the programsMaya2008icons folder and drop the viewCompass.mel script into the scripts folder. Then just open the script editor and got to file>source script, navigate to your scripts folder and select the viewCompass.mel script. Voila.
I hope this is a help to anyone who misses the old funtionality of this great tool.
