AutoEdges is a tool that automates the process of soft/hard edges creation within Maya.
It basically takes each selected edge from your selection and checks the angle between the 2 connected faces to that edge.
If the angle is less that the treshold you set, than that edge becomes a hard edges, otherwise it becomes a smooth edge.
