Fantastic Photo-realistic 3#

Photo-realistic 3D. It's a tough nut to crack, and a technical challenge that really tests the wit, skill and smarts of the 3D artist. New Zealand's (Auckland) Media Design School has a world-class 3D programme that features photo-realistic 3D, in particular a still-life project in which students have five weeks to compose and art direct a professional still life photograph, and then recreate it using Autodesk Maya (and ZBrush or Mudbox) to look as close to the original photograph as possible.

Students are pitched into the challenge soon after starting the Advanced 3D Productions graduate course with the project giving them a taste of what they will experience in the 3D industry upon graduating, as well as building their skills for the high-end team projects they also encounter on the programme.

"We teach our students precision, attention to detail and real-world likeness. Being able to create something that looks lifelike is a tough challenge and a mandatory skill in this industry," says Media Design School Head of 3D James Cunningham. The results of the project are pretty top notch, so much so that Media Design School regularly share the best work from the project with the world in their fun 'real or render' challenge.

Players are challenged  to test out their own 3D-spying abilities, to see if they can identify if a photo is real, or a 3D 'render.' Six photos are presented and you get to decide if they're real or render. You can play as many times as you want, and each time you guess four images correctly, you go into the draw to win an gift card. Play the challenge here and see if you've got what it takes.

I got 6 out of 6 but sadly I consider that a curse rather than a compliment. We have some uncanny work to do! Endless hours! pain, misery, bloodshot eyes, mad girlfiends, no life. Time to get back to work.

Damn! I only caught it 3/6 times. Pretty impressive stuff they've got over there. (although that darned blurring focal effect does make it difficult)
